Nicki Styx owns and runs Handbags and Gladrags, a shop selling vintage clothing and accessories, in partnership with her gay friend Evan. She just found out six months ago that she has a twin sister Kelly Charon, who is now staying with their grandfather Bijou Boudreaux, transvestite florist and southern belle extraordinaire. They never knew their mother Peaches Boudreaux, who made her living as a psychic before she died. Peaches gave them up for adoption and they were separated, not knowing the other twin existed. Both twins can see and hear the dead. Now Nicki has a big problem. Sammy or Samael as he is known to the legions of hell AKA the devil AKA Satan has opened up a business across the street from Handbags and Gladrags. He constantly pops up around Nicki, doing his best to tempt her into joining him as a lover, a partner and a soldier for his army, recruiting other souls for his army. Though he has tempted her, she has consistently told him no and since she has free will, he cannot force her. He also keeps trying to dissuade her from sending souls to the light. A case of heart failure in Nicki's past sent her to the afterlife. However, she was sent back and told to do to others, as she would have them do to her. It was at the hospital that she met her boyfriend Joe.
Joe Bascombe, a surgeon who runs the Emergency Room, is also Nicki's boyfriend. He met her when he saved her life. Though he has had problems coming to terms with the fact that his girlfriend sees and hears dead people, he is finally getting adjusted and is standing by her, no matter what. However, his love and devotion is put to the test when he comes close to losing his job and he could lose Nicki as well.
As Joe and Nicki have coffee at Moonbeams, she notices an extremely thin girl watching Joe with hatred in her eyes. The girl is a ghost named Crystal and she blames Joe for her death even though she was anorexic and too weak to be saved when she arrived at the hospital. It seems that the girl has made a deal with the devil. He has given her the power of possession. As Sammy does a TV commercial on the spot for his new business Divinyls, Crystal takes possession of Nicki's body. As Nicki, she accuses Joe of murder, claiming he killed Crystal Cowert. Crystal goes on to announce that dead people talk to Nicki, something Nicki does not usually let people know. She tells everyone that she will help them speak with their lost loved ones if they come on down to her business. This results in Joe's suspension from the hospital while the matter is investigated. People start showing up at Nicki's shop to speak with their loved ones or to find items they have lost, disrupting her workday. Then Lisa, the hospital attorney, offers to make Joe's problems go away if he will leave Nicki and stay with her. Will Joe take Lisa up on her offer? How can Nicki set everything right again?
